Horse Foaling Information

For those of you that have a mare which you bred for the first time and now is in foal, there is so much information you need to know.  On our website, www.highsierrahorsesupplies.com, there are so many books and charts under veterinary supplies filled with very informative information and charts that are available for new owners of a mare that is about to foal.  These items are an absolute must read.  One of the best books is called “Foaling Primer”.  There are many descriptions and photos to help you understand just what is going on with your mare.  Another item is “Foal Watch - Testing Kit For Foaling Management”.  This is also found in veterinary supplies on our website.  You will be amazed when you find all of the information you need to handle the foaling of your mare.  After the foal is born, please imprint that baby.  That will make your new foal so much easier to handle in all phases of its training.  There is even a “Foaling Chart” which is very informative.

Another book called “How to Raise Horses” gives you a wealth of information on what to feed your horse, how and where to house your horse, how to train your horse for whatever dicipline you intend to use your horse.  Several photos in the book are also enclosed for your information.  Owning a horse is a big responsibility.  The more informed you are, the better off you and your horse will be for the future.

Another item you might be interested in is the “VSI Foal Kit” which is on our website also under veterinary supplies. This kit contains necessary items you will need while preparing for your mare to foal.  The kit includes a bag  in which to put the placenta (afterbirth) so the vet can check it out to make sure everything is there and nothing is left in the birth canal which can cause infection.  Also included are latex gloves, iodine, a dip cup, an enema and a scapel to cut the umbilical cord.  Also make sure you have several clean towels to dry off the foal which allows you to touch the foal all over which is part of the imprinting process.
